My response (when this was posted on another list a few days ago)
I used to work in one such place (but thank $deity, that was email only,
not telephone). This was Juno's abuse desk (Juno is an American ISP which
found it very cheap to move its email support / abuse desks and
development over to India).
When Suresh Ramasubramanian has to become Scott Reed, and live Scott
Reed's life for the better part of the day, it becomes extremely tiring
(and doesn't do my self-esteem any good, thinking that Americans will
somehow benefit if their support calls are taken by mom and apple pie
americans - or those pretending to be mom and apple pie americans -
instead of asians, hispanics ....)
I think these companies dare _not_ try this stateside - there would be
loud howls from various ethnic minorities about discrimination, racism etc
etc.
