Re: [silk] Frank's Intro
Hi Venky,
| . Linux is another common thread. I am part of a group that's
| localising Linux in Indian languages (see www.indlinux.org).
I did not make it clear in my intro that I am trying to initiate a
Perl/Hindi project. I am trying to organize a group of people who are
venturing into a place which can only be considered a linguistic mine field.
I am not a Hindi speaker myself (yet), but I have run out of excuses!
The two "public" fields I am most passionate about personally are
internationalization and computer-based scientific education. I believe that
the GPL/GFDL is virtually tailor-made for both. But there is a lot more I am
thinking about these days...I am getting deeper and deeper into the history
of computer science and I am realizing that it is one thing to teach
software engineering at the IISC and lose 80 % of those engineers to other
countries and another thing to make hardware accessible and thereby create a
userbase to sell to. I am simplifying, of course. I have a few ideas as
regards hardware engineering as well.
Have also
| written an article titled "Why Linux Makes Sense for India" for slashdot
| (search for my name on www.slashdot.org).
I remember the article. There were some articles on slashdot about 10 months
ago dealing with India-specific problems. I am trying to get into journalism
in a bigger fashion these days. I did a few articles on technical stuff
beginning of this year. All for the Wrox website, though.
|
| Some of my writings are on my site (not updated since Feb 1998!!) at
| www.venky.org and a column I used to write called "E-mail from the ether"
at
| www.timescomputing.com/eml.html
|
| Chief interests: Venture capital and atartups in India (I edit
| www.venturekatalyst.com) and IT and it's role in economic development.
That would complement my interests rather nicely. I tend to be a little too
"utopian" most of the time:)
I will try to be in Bombay by the end of April (stopover on my way to
England - have to go for a week).
cheers
-frank

| If you are in Mumbai, let's meet up.
