Re: [silk] Er, Are We, Like, Confused Or Something?

<x-flowed>
The makers of American Desi are smart, they knew how to make money. They could read the pulse of the average movie goer. I don't think they were ever confused - they successfully conned lots of people
into believing their claim that the movie is a sensitive exploration into the lives of Indian Americans.

Make the title of my film "We're Not Confused, We're Just Dishonest" ;-)

The pre screening publicity and reviews were misleading enough to make even discerning people go watch it only to come out feeling
dismayed.

Sounds like so much of the hype that surrounds novels by NRIs. I regret spending $23 on Suri's "Death of Vishnu." But we live and learn. Won't go near Chitra Banerji's "The Unknown Errors of Our lives."

I read a few newspaper reviews here - even those that
criticize the movie are careful - may be the feeling
is that it is politically incorrect to criticize a
"cross cultural" effort - yours is
 the only honest appraisal I have seen till date.

Odd situation.
I expect the "anything-exotic-has-to-be-good BS from the (white) American press, but it gets nauseating when desis here do it also. I remember vaguely when it was announced Purva Bedi would appear in an ER episode. SAJA's 'voice' Sree Srinivasan gushed along the lines of how an Indian-American had made it, we should be so proud of her, go tell everyone to watch and make sure she gets the credit she deserves. All proper South Asian journalist-types fell into line with more of the same.

A sane voice finally posted something like "shoudn't we see if she can act, first?"
